*Mountain Rescue: Supporting Our Neighbours and Keeping People Safe*
Our first call-outs of the year:
Our primary role is clear: we rescue people in the mountains, not vehicles. However, when a neighbouring team reached out for assistance after their 4x4 became stuck on our patch, we were happy to lend a hand. They were carrying out a reconnaissance for a future exercise with full landowner permission but unfortunately ended up bogged down on the moor.
We deployed a couple of Land Rovers and team members experienced in off-road recovery to help free their vehicle. While that was underway, we received a callout for two walkers who had set off from Edale and found themselves in difficulty on Bleaklow. Their map (an online App) suggested a route that crossed a waterfall, and with darkness falling and inadequate lighting, they wisely called for help rather than risk continuing.
As they could give a good indication of their location, we dispatched another section of the team—those not knee-deep in peat—to guide them safely off the hill.
It was a great example of teamwork and versatility: different parts of the team tackling very different challenges across the moors. By the end of the evening, the walkers were safely on their way home, and a very peat-coloured 4x4 was heading back to base for a well-earned wash.
Glossop Mountain Rescue is a voluntary organisation, we survive only on donations from the public. Please consider donating to help us continue what we do.
